4 Inch Zip Ties
A 4 inch zip tie is the smallest tie most people keep on hand, and it earns its place wherever a full-size tie would leave a long tail and a bulky head. Once the strap feeds through the head and catches, a 4 inch tie closes around a bundle of roughly 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter. Treat that as approximate: the real figure depends on the strap width and how much length the head uses up. It is enough for a few low-voltage leads, a folded charger cord, or a short run of sensor wire along a chassis.

Our 4 inch ties are rated 18 lb minimum loop tensile strength, which is the miniature class. That rating is about holding things in position, not bearing load. Miniature ties keep light wires where you put them, but they are the wrong choice for anything that pulls, flexes hard or carries weight. They are molded from 100% nylon PA66, the same material as our longer ties.
When a bundle creeps past an inch, step up to 8 inch. You get more than twice the wrap, and in our current range a far higher strength rating. Pick Black for anything that will see sunlight and Natural Clear White for indoor work.

Typical uses
Enclosures and control panels
Grouping small-gauge leads inside project boxes, junction enclosures and control panels, where space is tight and a short tail trims flush without snagging fingers later.
Desk, TV and charger cords
Holding the loops of USB, headphone and charger cables behind a desk or entertainment center without the bulk of a longer strap.
Add-on vehicle wiring
Keeping a dash-cam lead, accessory wire or sensor cable tight against an existing harness. Route away from exhaust parts and anything that moves.
Tags, bags and crafts
Closing bags, attaching labels and price tags, and holding craft or display assemblies together where a light, tidy hold is all the job asks for.
Is a 4 inch zip tie right for your job?
Use a 4 inch tie when the bundle is small, the load is negligible and a compact head matters. A quick check: wrap a strip of paper around the bundle and mark it. If the wrap measures more than about 2.5 to 3 inches, you are at or past what a 4 inch tie can close, and the lock may only catch a tooth or two.
The next length in our range is 8 inch. It handles bundles about twice the diameter and carries a much higher rating, so it is the better pick for anything outdoors in wind, subject to vibration, or holding something that could pull. The zip tie size chart covers every length side by side.
| Length | Approx. bundle diameter | Rating in our current range | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 in | About 3/4 to 1 in | 18 lb | Small leads, cords, tags, crafts |
| 8 in | About 2 to 2.25 in | 120 lb | Household and shop bundles, light outdoor work |
| 10 in | About 2.5 to 2.75 in | 120 lb | Thicker cords, tubing, split loom |
An 18 lb rating is a minimum loop tensile test figure, not a working load. Do not use miniature ties to hang, support or restrain anything that could fall or cause injury.
Frequently asked questions
What are 4 inch zip ties used for?
Light, small-diameter jobs: grouping thin wires in electronics and panels, tidying charger and headphone cords, attaching tags and labels, closing bags and holding craft pieces. They are chosen for their small head and short tail rather than for strength.
How big a bundle can a 4 inch zip tie hold?
Roughly 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter, approximately. The exact limit depends on the strap width and head design, so leave some margin rather than pulling the tie to its last tooth.
Are 4 inch zip ties strong enough for car wiring?
For holding a light accessory or sensor wire against an existing harness, generally yes. For anything that vibrates heavily, bears load or sits near heat, use a larger, higher-rated tie and keep it away from exhaust and moving parts.
Can I use 4 inch zip ties outdoors?
Choose Black, which is UV-stabilized for outdoor use. Natural Clear White ties are intended for indoor and general use and are not UV resistant.
