8 Inch Zip Ties
The 8 inch zip tie is the size to grab when a miniature tie will not reach around the bundle but a foot-long strap would leave several inches of tail to cut off every time. Approximately, an 8 inch tie closes around a bundle of about 2 to 2.25 inches in diameter; the exact number depends on the strap width and the head. In practice that covers a coiled extension cord, a group of network patch cables, a tomato stem loosely held to a stake, or a handful of wires running along a workbench.

Our 8 inch ties are rated 120 lb minimum loop tensile strength, which puts them in the heavy-duty class. For most bundling, that is more strength than the job strictly needs, and the benefit shows up in use: a higher-rated tie is generally sturdier, resists nicks and stays locked when a bundle gets knocked around. They are made from 100% nylon PA66 and come in Black for sun exposure and Natural Clear White for indoor work.
Next to a 10 inch tie, the 8 inch gives up roughly half an inch of bundle diameter in exchange for less waste and a neater finish on smaller bundles. Next to a 4 inch tie, it is the jump from light positioning to genuine general-purpose use, which makes it a sensible default for a house, garage or service van.

Typical uses
Coiled cords and air hose
Holding an extension cord, power tool lead or small air hose in a neat coil so it hangs on a hook without unwinding.
Network and AV cabling
Grouping patch cords behind a media cabinet or small rack. Snug the tie by hand rather than cranking it, so the cable jackets are not crushed.
Garden stakes and netting
Securing bird netting, plant supports and trellis mesh to stakes. Leave a loose loop around stems so plants can grow, and use Black ties outside.
Shop and garage organization
Bundling cut-offs of tubing or dowel, closing tarps through grommets on a frame, and labeling cords with a tag threaded onto the strap.
Add-on wiring runs
Following an existing harness or frame rail with accessory wiring on trailers, carts and equipment, clear of hot and moving parts.
Is an 8 inch zip tie right for your job?
Pick 8 inch when your bundles are about 2 inches across or less and you want enough strap to work with without long tails. It is a good all-round length if you only want to stock one size for household and light shop jobs.
If you often find the tie catching only on its last few teeth, go to 10 inch or 12 inch. If the bundle is well under an inch and you want the smallest possible head, a 4 inch tie is tidier. Our 8, 10 and 12 inch ties currently share the same 120 lb rating, so moving up in length here is about reach, not strength.
| Length | Approx. bundle diameter | Rating in our current range | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 in | About 3/4 to 1 in | 18 lb | Thin leads, tags, small cords |
| 8 in | About 2 to 2.25 in | 120 lb | Cords, patch cables, garden and shop bundles |
| 10 in | About 2.5 to 2.75 in | 120 lb | Thicker cords, drip line, split loom |
| 12 in | About 3 to 3.5 in | 120 lb | Fencing, conduit and pipe, larger bundles |
Frequently asked questions
What size bundle does an 8 inch zip tie fit?
Approximately 2 to 2.25 inches in diameter. Capacity varies with strap width and head design, so if a bundle is right at that size, a 10 inch tie will lock more securely.
Are 8 inch zip ties heavy duty?
Ours are rated 120 lb minimum loop tensile strength, which is generally called heavy duty. Keep in mind that the rating is a test figure, not a safe working load.
Should I keep 8 inch or 12 inch zip ties on hand?
If most of your bundles are small cords and cables, 8 inch wastes less strap. If you also wrap posts, pipe or thicker bundles, 12 inch covers more jobs. Many people keep both.
Can 8 inch zip ties be used outside?
Yes, in Black, which is UV-stabilized for outdoor use. Natural Clear White ties are for indoor and general use and are not UV resistant.
